Getting Started

The purpose of this exercise is to acquaint you with some of the factors involved in the selection of a fungal population resistant to a fungicide. The exercise will be conducted on a computer simulation model called Resistan, which simulates selection in a clonal population (an asexually reproducing, haploid organism). The default parameters in the model are for a generalized fungus and generic fungicides. For this exercise, we will want to parameterize Resistan to represent the control of apple scab (caused by the fungus, Venturia inaequalis) with a multi-site fungicide, captan, and a single-site fungicide, benomyl. (To create your own dataset for a different fungus or for new fungicides, see the Resistan Model Description.)

To load the parameters,

  1. Click on Venturia dataset.
  2. Highlight the entire block of text, and copy it.
  3. Start the simulation by clicking on the button in the left margin.
  4. Click on the Simulation menu and select Load Data File.
  5. Click in the window that opens, paste your copied text there, and click on the "Load Data File" bar at the bottom of the window.
You have now parameterized Resistan with the Venturia data set and are ready to begin the exercises. (Note: to be sure that the model is properly initialized, you will have to load the Venturia dataset again before the start of each new exercise. Leave the Venturia dataset window open to facilitate copying and pasting it repeatedly.)
